5 Affordable Ideas to Show a Stranger Kindness on World Kindness Day (November 13th)

November 2, 2018 | By Louis Tully

Relief takes many different forms in our world. Those staying up all night studying for a test, find relief when they see their passing grade. Those facing a paycheck gap, find it in payday loans. But what about the world at large? There’s a universal relief the world needs now more than ever, and it’s given through kindness. If you want to live free, kindness is key. On this World Kindness Day (November 13) dare to show someone you care. Whether it’d be a friend, a family member or complete stranger, tell someone out there you’re rooting for them. Here are a few affordable ways you can put on your kindness cap and make someone’s day.

Say Something Nice

Words go a lot further than we realize. Nothing hits closer to the heart than words of kindness. Saying something as simple as, “I like you” can turn somebody’s world upside down, and yours too! Here are just a few examples of kind words you could say to help brighten someone’s day:

  • “You are enough.”
  • “You look good!”
  • “You got this.”
  • “I enjoy your company.”
  • “I’m glad we’re friends.”
  • “You’re unique.”
  • “I trust you.”
  • “Don’t change a thing about you.”

Do a Good Deed

People rarely participate when it comes to performing good deeds, but it’s a necessary part to our humanity and one that makes our world a better to place to live in. On this World Kindness Day, exercise a little selflessness and do something nice for someone that you would want done for yourself. You don’t have to break out your wallet in order to show others you care. In fact, most good deeds will only cost you a few minutes of your time. Here are a few examples of what that might look like:

  • Pay for the person behind you at the Starbucks line.
  • Donate some old clothes to the Salvation Army or homeless shelter.
  • Offer to help a friend move.
  • Friends of any parents? Offer to babysit for free.
  • Tell your parents, siblings, significant other (or anybody really) that you love them.
  • Hold the door open for someone.
  • Know somebody struggling with weight? Tell them they look good today.
  • Are you good at math? Offer to help a friend study for their test or volunteer at your local college’s academic center.
  • Introduce yourself to your new neighbors.
  • Offer to buy one of your coworkers a coffee.

Give a Gift

Gifts come in many forms. They can be big and extravagant or small and seemingly unimportant. But the magic behind gift-giving lies in the intentions of the gift-giver. The act of giving a gift to someone is the perfect demonstration of care and love. If you want to do something kind for someone, buy them a gift! Try some of these gift ideas that are both thoughtful and affordable:

  • A keychain: Who doesn’t love a shiny new keychain? It’s the perfect ‘just because’ gift you can surprise a friend with.
  • A t-shirt: You can never have too many t-shirts. Grab a fun graphic tee for a friend at Wal Mart for $7.99 or Target for $12.99.
  • A poster: Know somebody who’s going away to college? Buy them a poster for their new home away from home! Posters are yet another fun gift that costs less than $10.
  • An air freshener: Nobody will admit it, but getting a brand-new air freshener for the car is an instant mood booster.
  • A coffee mug: Know a coffee-lover? Buy them a mug!
  • A DVD: With online streaming and 4K video on the rise, DVD’s have gotten really cheap, but they’re still relevant. A DVD is a perfect “just thinking of you” gift.
  • Something you made: Nothing says “I love you” like something you made yourself at home.
  • A letter: Got some unresolved conflict to settle with someone? Write them a letter telling them you’re sorry (even if you’re not at fault). Letters are one of most thoughtful gifts you could give someone.
  • A song: Got a signifcant other in your life? Write them a song! Songs are a romantic and thoughtful gesture that won’t cost you a dime.

Give a Hug

Hugging is the universal language of kindness. Everyone needs an occasional hug (some more often than others). If you want to do something kind for someone today, offer them a hug. Hug a stranger if you’re feeling bold or just hug a friend to be safe. Hugging is the kind action that lets you tell the other person you care without saying a word.

Be There for Someone Who Needs It

Believe it or not, somebody out there needs you. Whether it’s someone very close to you or perhaps even someone you never met before. We all need someone sometimes. A helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, someone to sit and talk to or just someone to listen. Regardless of who or what it is, use this World Kindness Day to find somebody who needs you to be there for them. You can turn someone’s life around just making your time available to them. It’s the small things in life that make the biggest difference.
